Sound & Secure with Laminated Glass
Among the various advancements in glass technology, laminated double-glazed glass stands out as a prime example of modern ingenuity meeting energy efficiency. From enhancing noise reduction to ensuring safety and security, this specialised type of glass is beneficial to homes in Canberra’s busy neighbourhoods.
What is Laminated Glass
Like our standard double-glazed glass units, laminated glass is comprised of multiple layers of glass separated by argon gas and sealed around the edges. Unlike our double-glazed units, laminated glass has three layers of glass, two of which are sandwiched together with a tough, transparent interlayer made of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This interlayer is where the magic lies and creates an extra barrier against sound and provides security against penetration.
How does Laminated Glass Work?
The interlaying film, PVB comprises a thermoplastic material nestled between two glass layers. Upon lamination, these components forge a resilient connection, ensuring the long-term integrity of the glass. This fusion is achieved by subjecting the glass and PVB film to high temperatures, causing the PVB to soften and uniformly spread across the glass surface. Subsequently, the heated assembly undergoes pressure application to maximise the strength of the bond.
Benefits of Laminated Glass
While laminated glass is more expensive than our standard double-glazed units, we recommend it for areas of the home that could benefit from the below:
Energy Efficiency: The multiple layers and gas-filled gap are formidable barriers against heat transfer, making laminated double-glazed glass highly effective at insulating interiors from external temperature fluctuations. Compared to standard double glazing that has uValues of 2.2-2.4, laminated glass provides lower uValues of 1.7-1.8. This, in turn, reduces the reliance on heating and cooling systems, leading to lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint. We recommend laminated glass for North and East facing rooms.
Noise Reduction: The dual-pane design, coupled with the interlayer, significantly dampens sound transmission, making laminated double-glazed glass an excellent choice for noise-sensitive environments such as urban areas or properties near busy roads. Laminated glass offers up to 60% noise reduction, reducing sound levels by as much as 35 decibels when paired with compression-sealed frames like tilt & turns, awnings, casements, hinged doors and smart slides.
Enhanced Safety: Unlike traditional glass, which shatters into dangerous shards upon impact, laminated double-glazed glass remains intact, minimising the risk of injury from flying glass fragments. This property also acts as a deterrent against intruders as it is very difficult to break through, enhancing security. For this reason all of our front doors include laminated glass as a standard.
This video provides an example of the difficulty of breaking through a laminated piece of glass. At the start of the video, there is one impact already made to one side of the laminate.
UV Protection: The interlayer filters out a considerable amount of potentially harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause damage to the interiors of buildings, such as furnishings, floors, and artwork, as well as to the occupants. The interlayer absorbs the UV radiation and prevents it from passing through, thus reducing the risk of fading, discoloration, and other forms of sun damage. As a result, laminated glass is an effective solution for protecting buildings and their occupants from the negative effects of UV radiation.
Types of Laminated Glass
There are various thicknesses available for laminated glass. At Solace Creations, we mainly supply two types of laminated glass:
6.38 Standard
The standard laminate unit offers better acoustic performance compared to standard double glazing. As well as, UV protection and lower uValues.
AudioShield
If you are looking for a higher acoustic performance there is a range of thicker laminates called AudioSheild that achieve lower decible penetration into the home.
Laminated double-glazed glass represents a harmonious fusion of cutting-edge technology and practical functionality. Its ability to simultaneously enhance energy efficiency, safety, and comfort makes it a standout solution in modern architecture and construction. Tthis innovative glass type continues to redefine the standards of performance and sustainability in the built environment.
