Solace Creations Tips to Building an Energy Efficient Home
Orientation is Key
Since we are located in the southern hemisphere, the sun remains in the northern half of the sky. In Canberra, where winter heating is necessary, we can make the most of this by positioning as many rooms as we can on the northern side of the house. There is no block in Canberra that can’t be designed in a passive solar manner – sometimes with a bit more thought than normal, but it can be achieved.
To keep out the summer sun, combine windows with well-designed eaves. This will allow free heating from the lower-positioned sun in the winter and shading from the higher-positioned summer sun.
Insulate, Insulate, Insulate
Insulating your walls, ceiling, floor, windows, and doors is crucial for enhancing the energy efficiency and comfort of your home. Proper insulation helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature, reducing the strain on heating and cooling systems, which can significantly lower energy bills. By preventing draughts and minimising heat loss during the winter and keeping the heat out during the summer, insulation also contributes to a more comfortable living environment. Additionally, it can reduce noise pollution from outside, creating a quieter and more peaceful home. Investing in comprehensive insulation not only improves the overall comfort and efficiency of your home but also has long-term environmental and financial benefits.
Cross Ventilation
Design your home to facilitate natural cross-ventilation to keep it cool in warmer months. Cross-ventilation can be achieved by having a window with a smaller opening on one side and a wider opening on the other, creating a pressure difference that encourages airflow through the space. This setup helps draw fresh air in through the smaller opening, while the wider opening allows warm, stale air to exit more easily. Strategically placing windows and vents on opposite sides of rooms and aligning them with prevailing winds can significantly enhance this effect. Additionally, consider the use of high, operable windows or clerestory windows to expel hot air that rises to the ceiling, further aiding in the cooling process. By designing for optimal cross-ventilation, you can reduce reliance on mechanical cooling systems, lower energy consumption, and maintain a comfortable indoor environment naturally.
Thermal Mass
Beyond basic insulation, use materials with high thermal mass, such as concrete or brick, which can absorb and slowly release heat, helping to maintain a stable indoor temperature.
Cool Roofs & Shading
Install a cool roof that reflects more sunlight and absorbs less heat. Use shading devices like eaves, pergolas, and external blinds to block direct sunlight in summer while allowing solar gain in winter.
Smart Home Tech
Incorporate smart home systems that allow you to monitor and control energy use remotely. Smart thermostats, lighting, and appliance controls can help you optimize energy consumption.
Energy-Efficient Lighting
Use LED lighting throughout your home. LEDs consume less energy and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, making them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice. Additionally, LEDs produce less heat, reducing the cooling load on your air conditioning system during warmer months. Avoid lighting that creates extra holes in the ceiling because these holes can compromise the integrity of your insulation and air sealing. Gaps in the ceiling allow conditioned air to escape and outside air to enter, reducing the overall energy efficiency of your home. They can also provide pathways for dust, insects, and moisture, potentially leading to indoor air quality issues and structural damage over time. Instead, opt for surface-mounted or recessed LED fixtures that are designed to minimise air leakage and maintain a continuous thermal barrier. By carefully selecting and installing your lighting, you can enhance your home’s energy efficiency, comfort, and durability.
