Thresholds for Inclusivity and Future Proofing

by | Jul 11, 2024 | Information

The National Construction Code 2022, introduced in Canberra in 2024, brings an inspiring change: all new dwellings and building-approved renovations must include at least one low-threshold door with a minimum clear opening of 820mm. This regulation not only enhances accessibility but also embodies our commitment to creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for everyone.

The Livable Housing Design Standard by the ABCB provides technical provisions that enhance accessibility and create inclusive, welcoming spaces for everyone. Designed for Class 1a buildings (houses) and Class 2 sole-occupancy units (apartments) as defined in the NCC, these standards ensure homes better meet the community’s needs.

Low threshold doors are a key feature of accessible design, ensuring homes are practical to individuals with mobility challenges, the elderly, and parents with prams. At Solace Creations, we offer low threshold options for both hinged and sliding doors from our two trusted brands, Aluplast and Deceuninck.

3.2  Threshold The threshold of an internal doorway that is subject to Clause 3.1 must— be level; or (a) have a height not more than 5 mm if the lip is rounded or bevelled; or (b) have a ramped threshold that— (c) does not extend beyond the depth of the door jamb; and (i) has a gradient not steeper than 1:8; and (ii) is at least as wide as the minimum clear opening width of the doorway it serves.

Hinged Door

Introducing Seigware’s Alumat barrier-free magnetic thresholds.

These innovative thresholds feature a magnetic profile at the bottom of the door and a corresponding seal in the threshold.

When the door is closed, the magnet attracts the seal, creating a tight barrier against air leakage, noise, and water. Upon opening, the seal retracts, providing a level surface for easy access.

They are also simple to maintain, requiring no electrical wiring or batteries, and can be cleaned easily by wiping the magnetic profiles with a damp cloth.

To achieve an 820 mm clear opening width for a single swinging door, we use a frame size of 1010 mm. We offer a maximum door frame of 1200 mm wide with an opening of 1060 mm wide.
