Modern home, but is it comfortable?

These clients in Red Hill have a house built in the early 2000s when single-glazed aluminium windows were the go-to material in Australian construction. Although they met the building standards, the windows didn’t work in the house’s favour causing the clients discomfort all year round. The windows were cold in winter, and the western-facing windows were unbearable in summer.

We replaced all of their windows and doors with Aluplast uPVC Double Glazing in the dark grey profile colour called Anthracite.

Their previous sliding door was divided into quarters and opened in the centre, making the design visually very busy. By including a 3.6 m half-and-half smart slide door in their main living area, we were able to maximise not only their insulation but also their view. The smart slide door has a compression sealing mechanism that allows maximum insulation for a sliding door style. Their room now feels more open and bright.

For the window opening styles, we went with a combination of awning, sliding, and fixed windows. Compared to their previous awning windows, which had a chain mechanism, the new style has an easy-to-wind-out scissor arm. The windows perfectly frame their green and lush views of the garden without inviting the outside temperature in.

We provided their little fur baby with a pet flap in the laundry. Now they don’t have to worry about letting their dog in and out every 30 minutes. Is a dog door very insulative? Realistically, no. Does it make everyone in your family more comfortable? Yes. That’s what it’s all about. By having the pet flap in the laundry, they are able to close that room off to the kitchen if they want to create less of an insulation weakness.

For the glass types, we used a combination of super grey glass, laminate and ‘standard’ double-glazed glass to optimise each aspect of their house. Super Grey glass not only creates privacy from outside the home but also enhances solar control with a comfortable view from inside the home. As seen below on the front door, the super grey reflects back, while from the inside, you can see out with only a slight tint. They used this glass in their ensuite, too, to be able to have unobstructed views from their bathtub, and in their main bedroom for added privacy. On the smart slide door, we added laminated glass which helps block UV rays from damaging the carpet and furniture and adds security.

The clients love the look of their new windows and doors. Along with their upgraded wall and roof insulation, their new insulated window and doors are enhancing the comfort of their home massively. This will save on their energy bills and make their homes more eco-friendly. Our clients are now looking forward to a warmer home during the winter and cooler summers for years to come.
