One Step Closer to a Warmer Winter
This family home is currently undergoing an insulation renovation to increase its thermal properties and combat the chilly winters of Canberra.
The homeowners, who are originally from Europe, are well-versed in the benefits of uPVC double-glazed windows and doors, which is a norm for European countries. When they bought their home, it already had double-glazed aluminium windows and a timber front door. Unfortunately, the aluminium frames were not thermally broken, which resulted in unwanted heat transfer, and the double glazing had a smaller air gap than what is recommended. Meanwhile, timber doors are known for being difficult to seal. They decided to upgrade their windows and doors to UPVC double glazing while they made insulation improvements to their home.

The homeowners selected Deceuninck frames, a premium brand known for its exceptional quality and durability, from Forever Green Windows. We worked closely with them to achieve their vision, and for the front door, we designed a glass door with a smaller sidelight, which not only created a wider entryway but also allowed for more natural light to enter the house. The door features the Two-Transom design, which is both modern and timeless. Matelux laminated glass was chosen for its ability to provide strong privacy, diffused light, and enhanced security. The Ash Black colour, both inside and outside, adds a touch of elegance to the overall look and feel of the door, making it a standout feature of the house.

The windows were designed with Ash black on the outside and white on the inside. This colour combination unifies the home’s external features while creating a fresh, clean look on the inside. They have chosen awning windows for the wet areas, which are ideal for smaller windows, and sliding windows for the bedrooms. The sliding windows provide excellent airflow without occupying any space inside or outside the home.
In the bathroom and WC, they opted for Satinlite glass which has a horizontal and vertical line texture that invites a lot of light in while not compromising on privacy.

Beyond Carpentry & Design has done a remarkable job in installing the windows and door within a span of two days. The client is now working closely with Alexander Watson to insulate the walls of their house to make it even more energy-efficient and comfortable. With these upgrades, the client can now look forward to a cosy Canberra winter.
