Why We Love Tilt and Turns

Jul 19, 2024 | Information

Tilt and Turn windows have been a popular design in Europe for decades. Their clean aesthetic and versatile operation make them one of our favourite opening styles to incorporate into any room in our clients’ homes. In this blog post, we will discuss why we love this window style and why you may consider utilising it in your new or current home.

Modern window for modern homes

Versatile Ventilation

Experience the perfect combination of functionality with the option to tilt the window for everyday ventilation or turn it for maximum airflow. This feature allows you to customise your airflow according to your needs and create a comfortable environment in any weather.

To ’tilt’ the window, close the sash and lift the handle, then pull it towards yourself. The sash will tilt inwards.

To ‘turn’, close the sash and turn the handle to the side, then pull it inwards.

180 Hinge

When hinged on a fixed window, the turn feature can fold back 180 degrees. This design allows the window to be opened fully, providing a neat and space-efficient solution for ventilation.
If the tilt and turn is not hinged on a fixed window it will open over 90 degrees until it is stopped by the reveal or wall.

Full Height Availability

Avoid extra lines (transoms) in the window with full-height options. Available in heights up to 2400 mm, this design choice can help create a cleaner and less cluttered appearance. The tall window allows for optimal ventilation throughout the room when in the turn position.

Clean Finish

As this window opens inwards, it allows for the screen to be fixed externally for a neat and clean look from the inside.

Concealed hinges are also available for an even more minimal design with less visible hardware.

Modern European Design

Europe has been one step ahead of us in window design for decades. Tilt and turn is a common design used for its versatility and style. Tilt and turn is suitable for any room in the home.

Electric Opening

For hard to reach areas, the electric tilt-only window is an excellent option for ventilation at the flick of a switch.

Adjustable Opening

Add an arrestable stay to leave the window open at different degrees in the ‘turn’ position. This allows the sash to stay open and not close by itself in the breeze.

Practical Sidelight Option

It is very popular in Australia to use our front doors for ventilation. You will often see homes with a fly door covering the front door. Use a tilt and turn as a sidelight on your front door to eliminate the need to screen the door itself. This creates a much cleaner look on the entry door as well as making the door easier to use. Combined with a security screen over the tilt and turn sidelight, you can have secure ventilation day and night through your entry way.

Blind Compatibility

Highly compatible with Nordic Honey Comb blinds that fix into the bead, allowing neat blinds that do not cover the entire window frame. We especially love these blinds as they can be opened from the top-down or down-up to provide customised privacy and shading throughout the day. This blind is very useful for busy areas where you want that extra privacy but would like a view outside through the top of the window.

Barn Door

Adding a tilt and turn to your laundry door is a great way to provide ventilation to your laundry room without requiring a screen over the door. This design is especially practical if you don’t have a laundry window and only have a door.

Paired with a security screen, the tilt or turn can be left open all day with your peace of mind that your home is secure.
